Red, FTW!

So I’m taking Intro to Digital Photography this semester! (Yay!) We got our first project this week, Color Theory. The basic idea is to choose a color, and shoot images using that color as a theme, in analogous, monochromatic, and complimentary color schemes. I chose red. so far, I already have a few that I’m kinda liking, but I need to have about 30 or so photos for the class, so sinceย  I’m going on a trip into Manhattan this weekend with a friend, I’m hoping take a few more photos there…

Here’s one of my favorites so far. Its kinda cheeky, and that’s why I like it. ๐Ÿ™‚

umbrella and rainboots

Yep.. those are my knees.

More to come! ๐Ÿ™‚

“We’re fools whether we dance or not, so we might as well dance.” ~Japanese Proverb

an outtake from my photoshoot for my Photoshop class. We need to clone ourselves in an image using Photoshop. I don’t know if any of what I took will work for my project, they’re a bit grainy as the lighting wasn’t so great, and many pics are a bit blurry from movement.ย  But it was fun taking the shots…

I’m finding it really hard to focus right now…

There’s too much that needs to get done, and I can’t seem to concentrate today.

Apparently Saturday was a big day here on the blog… I got 117 visitors! that’s an all-time high here. haha! I hope you all found what you were searching for. Don’t know where you all came from, but hello! And I’m sorry it’s usually dreadfully boring around here. I feel now I should update more often. I know I say/write that a lot, but really I will try.

I got an early Christmas present. A Quantaray 18-50mm f3.5 wide angle lens. I read a few reviews online that weren’t too favorable, but for thirty dollars I figured it was worth a shot. Found it here.

Here’s what I’ve taken with the lens. Nothing spectacular… just a couple test shots.

More projects!

Finally got around to posting the last few projects I’ve been working on!

Took me long enough… I know. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Project 3 – CD Jacket Design:

With this project, I ended up creating my own imaginary artist. I started with an image I had taken over the summer, added a texture to it, and as it started to take on a fresco sort of look to it, decided to make it an Italian CD… lol. The image of the guitarist is the wonderful Brigitte Dale, aย  writer and video blogger who graciously let me use her image in this project.

Brigitte is currently in the finals to become the next Sam-e Good Mood Blogger, so help her win this awesome gig by voting for her here: http://www.sam-e.com/job/profile/213

Project 4 – Menu Design:

For this project, we had to use style sheets. I decided to go with a coffee shop theme. Though the shop doesn’t actually exist, there are other eateries in the downtown Port Jefferson area that have the double name, (Salsaย  Salsa, Pasta Pasta) that gave me the idea for the name of my shop.

Project 5 – Magazine Cover Redesign:

Here, we needed to change fonts and images, and consider the basic magazine layout.

I decided to redesign Shutterbug Magazine. I wanted to change the focus of this magazine from tech and gear, to a more creative audience.

Absolut…

Just a quick update. After a week or so of fiddling, I think I may have gotten an image I’m willing to settle with. there’s still a lot that I would change if I had the time (my project is due this Tuesday) but, I think that for a first try at building/lighting a studio, it didn’t come out all that bad.

Here’s the final image.

Absolut

I’ll post the final project soon!

And with that… I’m off to go drink the still life. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Building a tabletop studio…

I’m about 2 weeks in to my classes for this semester, and have gotten my first project for my graphic design class. We are to create a mock Absolut ad. So after doing some hunting through stock images, I decided that I’m going to just create on of my own, this way I can get exactly what I’m after (hopefully).

After racking my brain for a bit, I decided to go with the theme Absolut Simplicity. The image being a black background, typical for Absolut ads, with only a tumbler of ice. The Absolut bottle will be in the reflection of the tumbler.

So… how to get the image?

I did a little research online, and found this tutorial here: DIYPhotography.net and decided to give it a try with a few edits, as I don’t actually own any strobes or softboxes, or really any photography equipment besides a camera and a couple of lenses…

Here’s what my creation looks like.

What I used:

  • 2 pieces of scrap black fabric.
  • 3 aluminum turkey pans.
  • 3 work lights. (2 med, 1 small)
  • wax parchment paper. (usually for baking)
  • 1 large box.
  • 1 piece of Plexiglas.
  • 2 old speaker stands.
  • 1 slightly bent clothing rack.
  • a lot of duct tape.

I have to hunt down a nice looking tumbler, and grab a bottle of Absolut still, but I think the little studio came pretty decent. I’ll be posting my results and probably whatever test shots I take soon.

I’ve got a new look.

I was getting a little bored of the old blog design…. What do you think? Not sure if its a little too white, but it’s summer so I guess it will do for the rest of the season. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Here’s a couple shots from a visit to Sayville recently.

hello again, it’s been a while…

I’m not very good at keeping up with this blog as I thought I would be. I promise to try and do better.

Not much new news to post as of late I guess. But I suppose no news is good news? Or something like that…

Hope the summer starts to pick up a bit. We haven’t seen much sun here in about 3 months or so. This has to be the rainiest spring/summer in history.

It’s still raining…

And I wonder if I’ll ever see the sun again.

I’m still hoping for some feedback on those two photos I posted yesterday, but after downloading and reading the entry forms, I am allowed to send 2 images, so that makes my decision pretty easy. I did crop the red tulip a little, just so that it isn’t smack in the middle of the shot.

Help me choose

I went to the Huntington Tulip Festival today, even though it was raining. I wasn’t able to get too much before the downpour. I have a couple of images that I think came out pretty well. I’m going to try my hand at that photo contest, but I want your help. Of these two images, which do you prefer?
