Meet Anscoflex. It kinda reminds me of a vintage refrigerator when the front shutter is down. It’s green, a little quirky, and smells like an old man’s closet. But I kinda like it. From what I’ve been able to find about it online, it was designed by the same man -Raymond Loewy- who designed the Studebaker Starliner Coupé, and the Shell logo among many, many other things. He was considered one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century.

I acquired this little camera recently. It was being thrown away, and I was able to rescue it. I’m not completely sure if it works yet, but I’m hoping that I can clean it up a bit and fix the shutter, which seems to be sticking. Anyone who has any ideas or tips on how to fix it please leave me a comment. It would be greatly appreciated. This will be my very first attempt at trying to restore anything so…. with any luck, maybe you’ll see a few photos taken with this little camera soon.

I’m a proud Auntie :-)

Here’s a couple of pictures from Natalie’s first dance recital. She did a wonderful job!

I’ll post more as I get a chance to process them.

Enjoy!

The final ad… and what I learned.

Always do a test print. Or several. I wasn’t able to get into the computer labs at school, and learned that the hard way. My ad came out a black muddy mess.

I got a B+ still, mainly because the professor liked the idea, the image, and the fact that I took the initiative to take my own photo instead of pulling one off the web. SO luckily, it pulled my grade up, because that print was horrendous.

Here’s the final ad, in color, the way I intended it to look before the printer got it.

Absolut…

Just a quick update. After a week or so of fiddling, I think I may have gotten an image I’m willing to settle with. there’s still a lot that I would change if I had the time (my project is due this Tuesday) but, I think that for a first try at building/lighting a studio, it didn’t come out all that bad.

Here’s the final image.

Absolut

I’ll post the final project soon!

And with that… I’m off to go drink the still life. 😉

Building a tabletop studio…

I’m about 2 weeks in to my classes for this semester, and have gotten my first project for my graphic design class. We are to create a mock Absolut ad. So after doing some hunting through stock images, I decided that I’m going to just create on of my own, this way I can get exactly what I’m after (hopefully).

After racking my brain for a bit, I decided to go with the theme Absolut Simplicity. The image being a black background, typical for Absolut ads, with only a tumbler of ice. The Absolut bottle will be in the reflection of the tumbler.

So… how to get the image?

I did a little research online, and found this tutorial here: DIYPhotography.net and decided to give it a try with a few edits, as I don’t actually own any strobes or softboxes, or really any photography equipment besides a camera and a couple of lenses…

Here’s what my creation looks like.

What I used:

  • 2 pieces of scrap black fabric.
  • 3 aluminum turkey pans.
  • 3 work lights. (2 med, 1 small)
  • wax parchment paper. (usually for baking)
  • 1 large box.
  • 1 piece of Plexiglas.
  • 2 old speaker stands.
  • 1 slightly bent clothing rack.
  • a lot of duct tape.

I have to hunt down a nice looking tumbler, and grab a bottle of Absolut still, but I think the little studio came pretty decent. I’ll be posting my results and probably whatever test shots I take soon.

I’ve got a new look.

I was getting a little bored of the old blog design…. What do you think? Not sure if its a little too white, but it’s summer so I guess it will do for the rest of the season. 😉

Here’s a couple shots from a visit to Sayville recently.

hello again, it’s been a while…

I’m not very good at keeping up with this blog as I thought I would be. I promise to try and do better.

Not much new news to post as of late I guess. But I suppose no news is good news? Or something like that…

Hope the summer starts to pick up a bit. We haven’t seen much sun here in about 3 months or so. This has to be the rainiest spring/summer in history.

It’s still raining…

And I wonder if I’ll ever see the sun again.

I’m still hoping for some feedback on those two photos I posted yesterday, but after downloading and reading the entry forms, I am allowed to send 2 images, so that makes my decision pretty easy. I did crop the red tulip a little, just so that it isn’t smack in the middle of the shot.

Help me choose

I went to the Huntington Tulip Festival today, even though it was raining. I wasn’t able to get too much before the downpour. I have a couple of images that I think came out pretty well. I’m going to try my hand at that photo contest, but I want your help. Of these two images, which do you prefer?

Leave your comments below. 🙂

another rainy day…

It’s supposed to rain all weekend. I hope it lets up a bit for the festival this Sunday, that would be disappointing, since this would be the 1st year in about 6 years that I would actually be able to make it there without work getting in the way. It would figure it would rain.

Also slightly disappointing, the Starbucks by me is closing down after next week.  Now I’ll have to travel a bit farther for coffee and free wifi.

Here’s another shot from the photo shoot in Stony Brook the other day.
